Do You Suffer From “Stress Relief Tipitis”?

by Doc Orman, M.D.

This week marks the two year anniversary of the launch of this stress relief blog.  In honor of this milestone, I’ll be revisiting a series of three related blog posts that  I originally published here in January, 2012.  This first post in the series sets the theme by introducing a very common condition which I call “stress relief tipitis.”

What Is “Stress Relief Tipitis”

Stress Relief Tipitis is a condition where you believe—very deeply and very sincerely—that some simple tip or collection of tips is somehow going to give you long-term relief from your stress.  This condition is so prevalent that it afflicts millions (possibly billions) of people around the world today.

What Are The Symptoms?

The symptoms of stress relief tipitis are simple to recognize:

  • You are easily attracted to promotional headlines such as: “10 Fantastic Tips For Quickly Reducing Your Stress.”
  • You’ve encountered hundreds of tips for reducing stress during your life, only your stress hasn’t improved at all.
  • You keep thinking the next stress tip you receive will be the one that does  the trick.
  • It never dawns upon you that looking for quick-fix solutions is not the best strategy for coping with stress.

But here is one really good tip that can do you some good:

Tip: Stop thinking that tips are going to help you deal with your stress!

Tips Don’t Work

Now it would be nice if all you had to do to eliminate stress from your life was to locate some really good tips and then follow them.  However, that’s not the way life works.

Something much different—and much deeper—is needed.

More To Come…

In my next post in this series, I’ll explain exactly why tips aren’t very good for reducing your stress and why you should stop paying attention to most of the stress relief tips that come your way.
