How Political Thinking Makes Us Stressed Part 2This week, I am focusing on subtle ways that political thinking makes us stressed in ways we often fail to appreciate. 

“In each of my three blog posts this week, I will identify one key thought pattern that is very prominent in politics and that is also a powerful hidden cause of much of the stress we non-politicians experience every day in our lives.

In other words, I’m going to make the case that politicians are constantly “polluting” the mental environment in which we live, work, and think.”

Credit vs. Blame

In my first post this week, I explained how polarized thinking (either/or thinking) is extremely popular with politicians, even though it has very negative influences on the health and happiness of the general public.

I talked about polarized thinking in general, and I also listed a few specific examples. Today, I want to zero in on one particular type of polarized thinking that is also extremely popular among politicians—credit/blame thinking.

Notice how most politicians are quick to take credit for anything good that happens, and they are very reluctant to admit personal blame for anything bad that happens.  Notice how they also are very quick to blame their opponents for real or fabricated “sins,” and when they do this, the blame is almost always entirely one-sided.  They want you to believe that their opponent was totally to blame for something and that they and their party had absolutely nothing to do with it. This is classic polarized thinking, and it’s amazing how easily most of us fall for it.

Credit/Blame Thinking Vs. What Truly Happened

Have you ever wondered what it would look like if politicians actually told the truth about what truly happened, as opposed to constantly engaging in dishonest, misleading polarized credit/blame thinking?

You might start hearing politicians say something like this:

  •  “Sure, the economy is going bad, and both of our political parties are equally to blame for it.  And despite all the posturing, few of us have any good ideas about how to fix it.”
  •  “Sure, the housing crisis has been a mess, and while it’s very tempting to try to lay the majority of blame on the other party, it was really our party that caused this mess to occur in the first place.”
  • “Sure, I got Bin Laden, but I couldn’t have done it without the courage, wisdom, leadership, and determined efforts of my predecessor.”

Think you’re going to hear statements like that come out of the mouths of politicians anytime soon?  Think you’ll hear them in your entire lifetime?

Probably, not—even though they would be true and accurate statements.

The Problem With Either/Or Thinking

And that’s the real problem with all types of either/or thinking, including credit/blame thinking as just one example.

Either/Or Thinking takes your focus away from the full and complete truth about whatever happened.  And as I’ve told you many times before, in this blog, the more removed you are from the truth about life, the more stress and serious problems you are likely to experience.

So while politicians are proud of themselves for being able to play the “I’m taking credit game” or the “You’re to blame game,” and do these very well, they have no idea how damaging this credit/blame style of thinking is to each of us in our personal lives.

It’s unlikely, therefore, that politicians are going to change their ways. So it is totally up to you to protect yourself from all this “thought pollution” that’s swarming around you, especially during the last few months of a presidential election cycle.

In my next and last post in this three-part series, I’m going to focus on another very common “either/or” pattern of thinking that’s also a big part of politics and that most of us take for granted (and don’t see anything problematic about it.)
