New Reality TV Show: The Stress Games—Day 2

by Doc Orman, M.D.

The Stress Games--Day 2In my first post this week, titled The Stress Games—Day 1, I invited you to join me in a hypothetical reality TV contest, in order to show you how I answered the following question that an interviewer once posed to me:

“If you could only give people three pieces of wisdom to help them deal with their stress—and you could never, ever give them any more—what would those three things be?”

In this hypothetical competition, 40 average adults reporting high stress levels were randomly assigned to four groups of ten, and each group was given limited access to a successful stress coach.  The coaches had only 10-minutes a day, for the first three days of the challenge, to impart as much wisdom as possible to their team about how to lower their individual stress levels during the next 12 months of the contest.

Day 2 Advice

If you recall, I was selected as one of the four top coaches for this hypothetical reality show, and on Day 1, here’s the first piece of advice I gave to my group:

FORGET EVERYTHING YOU’VE EVER BEEN TOLD ABOUT STRESS, AND EVERYTHING YOU CURRENTLY BELIEVE ABOUT IT, NO MATTER HOW LOGICAL OR TRUE IT MIGHT SEEM! (Except that too much stress can possibly make you sick.)

I told my team to basically “empty their heads” of everything they assume to be true about stress and come back on Day 2 with a completely clean slate.  Then, I would fill the emptiness with just a few basic principles that they should keep firmly in their minds during the next twelve months, after they return home and start working diligently on reducing their stress.

Well, imagine that it’s now Day 2, and you are one of the ten people in my group. We’ve just gotten together for our second 10-minute session, and I am now going to give you my “three pieces of wisdom” that hopefully will help you to greatly reduce your stress and also become the winning team one year from now.

The Three Key Principles

So, now that your brain is entirely empty (with regard to stress), here’s what you should fill it with, and focus on, for the upcoming twelve months (as well as for the rest of your life):

PRINCIPLE #1:  LIFE ITSELF IS RARELY IF EVER STRESSFUL!

This is where it all starts—with your basic presupposition about where stress comes from for human beings.  Basically, everyone ends up in one of two camps about this: 1) either stress is caused primarily or mostly by the things that happen in life; or 2) life itself is rarely stressful, rather it is how we either consciously or unconsciously relate to things which produces most of our stress.

Given that your mind is now empty about stress, you are free to choose what you are going to put back into it.  You can choose now to belong to camp 1, camp 2, or possibly even to both.  I recommend you voluntarily choose camp 2. I recommend you adopt this empowering context for your life—just because you can!  Whether you actually believe it or not, you are a human being, so you can still choose to adopt this guiding principle if you think it might benefit you (like we do with our religious beliefs).

PRINCIPLE #2:  SINCE LIFE ITSELF IS NOT STRESSFUL, THEN IF YOU ARE HAVING ANY STRESS (OF ANY KIND), YOU MUST SOMEHOW BE CONTRIBUTING TO THIS!

This is the second guiding principle you should put back into your previously empty mind about stress.  This principle follows logically from PRINCIPLE #1.  After all, if you adopt the presupposition that stress doesn’t come from life, or from whatever happens around you, it’s got to be coming from someplace else, right?  Well, where do you suppose that is?  Could it possibly be coming from YOU?

I say you should always answer YES to this question.  Actually, I think you should even go one step further and say HELL YES!!–WHERE ELSE COULD IT BE COMING FROM?

I fully appreciate that you might not have many clues about how this could be true for you.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t adopt these two principles anyway.  I strongly recommend that you do adopt them, whether you understand how this all works or not.  Remember, few of us truly understand how gravity actually works, but it doesn’t matter—objects still fall toward the ground when they are released (at least here on Earth) and they don’t float upwards.

PRINCIPLE #3:  IF YOU CAN FIGURE OUT—PRECISELY—HOW YOU ARE GENERATING MUCH OF THE STRESS IN YOUR LIFE, YOU THEN ARE IN GREAT POSITION TO ALSO FIGURE OUT HOW TO STOP DOING THOSE THINGS, AND THEREBY ENJOY A SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION IN YOUR STRESS.

The reason why you should latch on to PRINCIPLE #1 and PRINCIPLE #2 …is because of this third key principle.  This is the payoff for having the courage to believe in PRINCIPLE #1 and PRINCIPLE #2, when almost everyone around you will tell you you’d be “crazy” to do so.

This is where true, long-term relief from your stress is going to come from.  Beause if you accept the presupposition (and that’s what it really is) that you MUST somehow be generating much of the stress in your life, whether you understand exactly how you are doing this or not, you will be empowered.

Forget all this stress management or stress avoidance advice you’ve been given.  It pales in comparison to what you can do if you embrace these three fundamental propositions.

You see, if you simply turn your focus from outside of yourself to inside of yourself to identify important causes of your stress, you’ll be greatly rewarded.  You might not be good at identifying these internal causes at first, but if you really want to get good at it, you can.  And once that happens, you’ll be amazed at how much personal control you’ll be able to exercise over many of your internal causes (and thus your stress) as a consequence.

To Be Continued…

Well, our 10 minutes for today is almost up, so that’s all the coaching I can give you right now.  When you come back tomorrow (Day 3–actually my third blog post in this series won’t appear until two days from now), I will give you one more secret (a bonus piece of wisdom) that will virtually guarantee your success with using this approach.
