Stress And Success: Why Do So Many Successful People Have Stress?

by Doc Orman, M.D.

This week I want to focus on several aspects of the relationship between stress and success. Many people believe the two go hand-in-hand.  So if you want to be successful you’ll just have to put up with a good bit of stress.

success and stress 1

I look at it differently, however.  If people have demonstrated the ability to be so very successful in life…how come they haven’t figured out how to be successful at eliminating their stress?

Success Normally Breeds Success

I’m sure you’ve heard the old adage that “success breeds success.”  To me, this means that people who have developed the ability to be successful in one area of life will usually figure out how to be successful in many other areas.

This is because success has more to do with character, commitment, determination, fortitude, optimism and work ethic.  And once you apply these traits to a specific new goal you want to achieve, you can usually attain it.

Something Unusual Must Be Going On

Yet here we have the interesting phenomena of many successful people struggling hopelessly to deal with their stress.  At a certain level, it doesn’t make sense.

I guess it might appear to make sense if you believe that stress is an inevitable part of life and it’s part of the territory for anyone who wants to take on big challenges or achieve great things.  But what if that theory really isn’t true?

What if successful people don’t have to put up with having lots of stress?  What if they do have the ability to be relatively stress-free?

Well, if this is the case, then something very unusual must be going on when it comes to our theories and strategies for getting rid of stress.  The only way successful people could “fail” at reducing their stress is if the common understandings about stress that everyone accepts to be true…really aren’t.

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you know that this is exactly what I believe is causing all the trouble.  To my way of thinking, it’s our “blueprint” about stress (and how to deal with it) that’s the main culprit.

Just go back a few weeks and read my posts about blueprint repair to understand more about what I’m pointing to.
