Stress Relief Question: How Good Is Your Thinking? Part 2

This week, I am asking you to reflect upon the role that the quality of your thinking plays in how much stress you experience.  In my first post this week, I made the following statement:

“…I believe that thinking and stress are absolutely related.  In fact, I would go so far as to say that I believe it is very hard to get stressed unless there is something very wrong with your thinking!

Let’s Explore This Further

There are multiple ways that less than optimal thinking can lead to stress. Here are just a few—sub-optimal thinking can lead to:

  • More emotional upsets than you need to have;
  • More relationship troubles than you need to have;
  • More financial problems than you need to have;
  • More of any other problems than you need to have.

But what are some of the common thinking mistakes that get many of us in trouble?

Negative Thinking—this is a common human tendency which is prevalent in our society.  The only thing is, most negative thoughts aren’t really true.

Either/Or Thinking—I’ve written several previous blog posts about this widespread pattern of thinking and how it leads to stress.

Failure vs. Feedback—if we viewed more of our problems as “feedback” about the quality of our own actions and beliefs, we’d be a heck of a lot smarter and a whole bunch more relaxed.

Events vs. Interpretations—It’s amazing how often we fail to separate events from our interpretations of those events. Failing to do this robs us of our power to freely choose what events mean and whether they detract from our lives.

And these are just a few of the many pitfalls in thinking that plague us every day.
