Stress, Weight Control, And Smoking (Part 3)

by Doc Orman, M.D.

stress and smokingThis week, I’ve been exploring some of the key interrelationships between stress, weight control, and smoking.  In my first post (Part 1), I highlighted some of these interrelationships, and then in my second post (Part 2), I pointed out why learning how to deal with stress, without having to depend upon food, cigarettes, alcohol, or other chemical coping strategies is so vitally important.

At the end of my second post on this topic, I made the following statement:

“In my third and final post in this series (Part 3), I’ll explain why even if you do try to learn how to use non-chemical coping strategies, your efforts, no matter how determined or sincere, are still highly likely to fail.”

So today, I want to explain a little more about why I believe this statement is true.

Myths And Misconceptions About Stress

If you’ve been following this blog for any length of time, you know that I am not a big fan of most stress reductions programs/resources that are available today.  One reason for this is that almost all of them are built upon serious myths and misconceptions about stress that many people, including most stress experts, mistakenly believe to be true.

If you missed some of these earlier posts, you can view them here:

Managing Stress Is NOT The Answer…Either!

One of the biggest myths about stress that is widespread today is that the best way to deal with any significant stress in your life is to learn how to manage it

In this series of three related blog posts on stress, weight control, and smoking, I’ve pointed out some of the major drawbacks of relying upon chemical coping strategies.  I’ve also suggested that you learn how to deal with your stress in more effective and healthy ways. The problem is…where do you go to learn how to do this?  And what kinds of non-chemical coping strategies should you adopt?

You see, even non-chemical coping strategies, like yoga, relaxation exercises, biofeedback, and other popular stress management techniques are just as problematic (but healthier) as using food, cigarettes, or alcohol.

Dealing With Symptoms Vs. Causes

The problem with all of these well-established stress management coping strategies is that they primarily deal with just the symptoms of your stress.  They do little to help you learn how to identify and deal with the underlying causes of your day-to-day stressful problems.

I believe the very best way to deal with stress, non-chemically, is to learn how to identify and deal with its underlying causes.  This is one of the primary reasons why I created this online website and blog, and it’s also the prime focus of my Stress Mastery training academy.

I’ve been teaching people how to develop true stress mastery for more than 30 years now.  And take it from me, anyone can learn how to do this.  It just takes the right orientation, the right conceptual models, and the right coping strategies that are not based upon myths and misconceptions, but rather are grounded in the truth about where stress really comes from for human beings.
